Paramedic on a Bike Program (Rapid Access Paramedics)

CMR does it again and again!!

The Canadian Medical Response, Paramedic Mountain Bike Response Program was officially launched in the summer of 1998 at Kelso Conservation Centre.

CMR christened their Bike units at the Kokanee 12 hours of Adrenaline bike race in July of 1998. This was where our CMR paramedics (Michael Gilbert & Jeremy Knight) were put to the test, with assistance from their mobile medical units.

The market research that was conducted following this event showed CMR how versatile these new medical bike units were.

With the rapid response mountain bikes, the bike team was able to respond quickly through the large outdoor areas and through the congested crowds. The bike units a llowed our medics to arrive at the patients' side faster and provide immediate medical attention to any minor or life threatening injuries. It also helped the bike team to determine if any additional resources; like ground ambulance support were required at the scenes. Therefore appropriate personnel, equipment and emergency service vehicles become effectively utilized.

The major advantages of using a bicycle emergency response unit is it gives shorter response times and has the ability to go almost anywhere vs. an ambulance which is restricted to areas that it can fit through. These units have proved to operate well in most indoor events also.

How much can one of these bike units really carry?

The bike units carry enough medical equipment and supplies to operate independently. Each unit includes: suction, airway management, IV Solution and an oxygen cylinder which lasts approximately 8-10 minutes on a full tank with a high concentration mask. The units also carry an abundance of basic first aid supplies, such as: Band-Aids, splints, antiseptic, swabs, gauze, eye drops - the list goes on and on.

What has the CMR bike program assisted in since 1998?

Since 1998 we have assisted a number of different organizations such as:

  • Kokanee 24 hours of Adrenaline Bike Race at Kelso Conservation Area in Milton and at Hardwood Hills in Barrie.
  • NBA 3 on 3 basketball tournament at Queens Park Circle
  • CNIC, CCS, Heart & Stroke walk-a-thon's
  • Braunstorm 2000 Tour
  • Numerous Track & Field and Cross Country Events for selected school boards in the GTA and other areas.

What does the future of CMR Mountain Bike Response program look like?

Fantastic!! CMR has gained an enormous amount of experience with our bike units in the last three years. We intend to use these experiences to benefit our existing and future customers by showing them that no matter what the accident we will be there before you can say OUCH!
